The holiday season is coming, companies are all getting ready to suck as much of your end-of-year bonus as possible.
So let rc the hardcore 戀物狂 here list out the ultimate shopping list here, so you don't spend your hard earn money on 2nd class trash!
1) Nintendo Wii (11.19.2006 in US, release shortly followed in japan then the rest of the world)
Throw away your xbox 360, forget about the PS3. this is the gaming console you need to get for this Christmas. Nintendo has always been the most intuitive game maker in the industry (notice i say intuitive, not best :D) N64 failed, and the cube failed. Reason for the failures were because their targeted customers has always been the 'public', and their previous products just weren't seductive enough to get these people interested. Wii is going to change all of that; hardcore gamers, noobsters, granny, grandsons, sane and the insane can enjoy the magic of gaming together. Thing I like most about Wii is, it is a visionary product, seeing how electronic entertainment has played a much bigger part of our lives than 10-20 years ago. Instead of trying to share the larger piece of pie with sony/m$, it's trying to make the pie bigger. Clever little Japanese, you deserve to win this time.
2) Treo 680 (early November in US)
10 years ago, a phone only needed to carry 3 functions; to make calls, receive calls, and to remember people's phone numbers. It's time to move on though. I noticed that around 3 years ago, I didn't carry this extra weight in my pocket just to make and receive phone calls. (in fact i hate talking on the street), it has to do more than that to secure a place in my pocket. So i came across the treo 600, which was the first treo with this mature form factor at the time, and i fell in love with it. It's so much more than a phone it's a communicator. i can finally fuck the 9 keypad typing, a stupid and inefficient input system which i had to put up with for many years. i finally freed myself from clicking through all these menu designed by brainless phone makers, which were at best unintuitive and limiting, because i had Palm OS on my phone. I have the option to check msn/web pages quickly when i was away from my desktop. Moved to 650 the day it released, and it only got better, and has served me well for the past 2 years. And it's extremely rare for me to love something I've had for 2 years, everyday.
Is 680 for me? probably not, i would most likely get the 'real' upgrade, 750 when it comes out from Europe -_- (damn palm marketing strategy) 680, at the price US$199, this is the 'public smartphone' to have. Palm has spent US$20 mil on marketing, working closely with big names like yahoo, ebay, google, typepad(!) to make sure every general public, not only the business/hardcore phone enthusiast can benefit from a smarter phone. with the upgraded appearance and colours, downgraded size and price tag, I am sure the 680 will have a go at success this time and sell like hotcakes. (maybe except hk, i had problems getting people to reply my emails most of the time, they are stuck with the idea no-verbal confirmation = 9 up)
throw away your O2, dopod, SE. these OEM products has no designer, only to fill up the spec sheet with the latest technology which 99% of you wont even use.
3) Windows vista (Jan 2007)
Jealous of your Mac-using friend? Well finally we'll have a Mac OSX clone, the windows vista. The sole reason why I am still stuck on this ugly 5-yr old XP interface is because of Autocad, which is the industrial standard in my field. If you have ever used a Mac before, there is really nothing new in windows vista :) 3D alt-tab, updated IE, media player, transparent windows, built in widgets. (at the end of the day, these are 'GUI', graphics user interface, so the prettier it is the better.) Technically there are improvements too, supposedly, like increased security, supporting up to 128gb ram, flash memory boosting performance..etc
oh yea M$ is really clever in sucking money. Apparently vista couldnt make the release before Christmas this year. so they decide to sell the sticker 'Vista ready' to computer manufacturers, and promise them a cheaper upgrade once vista is out. Get your new vista ready computer today!
OK enough geeking for today. don't forget to get a Christmas tree too.
